The exhibition “Cumuli – Trading Places”,
a sequel to “Cumuli – Zum Sammeln der Dinge” (“Cumuli – on Collecting Things”),
takes place from June 12 through July 25, 2015 at the L40 - Verein zur Förderung
von Kunst und Kultur am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.
The curatorial team consists
of the artists Robert Gschwantner, Ralf Hoedt, Jana Müller, Regine Müller-Waldeck,
Simon Wachsmuth, Moira Zoitl in collaboration with Vanja Sisek, Nina
Mielcarczyk and the curator Susanne Prinz. This time around, a picture by the
Venetian painter Canaletto takes center stage.
The painting “Campo di
Rialto” (1758-63), commissioned by the Berlin-born merchant, arts patron and
art collector Sigismund Streit and now on view at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin,
acts as a starting point and visual background of the exhibition “Cumuli 2”. It
is a painted record of a by-gone time. Today, the square’s architecture looks
virtually the same, a seemingly static spatio-temporal configuration. Yet, what
does this painterly document conceal? What does the picture tell us about art,
Venice, commerce and collecting?
Reproductions of the
painting serve as the core and backdrop of the exhibition display. Visitors can
move through the spatial installation as if in a life-size toy theater. This
spatialized dimension of the picture accommodates individual works by the
invited artists. The works consequently form a level of commentary which
relates to the references conjured by the painting and its copies. This can
provoke not only new interpretations of the painted document, but also a
multitude of narrative overlaps.
The exhibition will tour
to Venice at the end of this year. The reimportation of the Canaletto painting,
supplemented by the artists’ multi-layered interpretations, will stage a direct
confrontation between document and reality.

Die Ausstellung „Cumuli – Trading Places“,
das Folgeprojekt zu „Cumuli – Zum Sammeln der Dinge“ (2013) wird vom 12. 06. –
25. 07. 2015 im L 40 – Verein zur Förderung von Kunst und Kultur am
Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz präsentiert.
Für das kuratorische Team,
die Künstler/innen: Robert Gschwantner, Ralf Hoedt, Jana Müller, Regine Müller-Waldeck,
Simon Wachsmuth, Moira Zoitl in Zusammenarbeit mit Vanja Sisek, Nina
Mielcarczyk und der Kuratorin Susanne Prinz steht diesmal ein Bild des
Venezianischen Malers Canaletto im Mittelpunkt.
Das Gemälde „Campo di
Rialto“ (1758-63) das vom Berliner Kaufmann, Mäzen und Kunstsammler Sigismund
Streit in Auftrag gegeben wurde und heute in der Gemäldegalerie Berlin öffentlich
zugänglich ist, ist Ausgangspunkt und Bild-Hintergrund für die Ausstellung „Cumuli
II“. Es ist ein gemaltes Zeugnis einer vergangenen Zeit. Besucht man heute den
Platz in Venedig, weist er kaum architektonische Veränderungen auf, ein
scheinbar im Stillstand begriffenes Raum-Zeit-Gefüge. Doch was birgt dieses
malerische Dokument in sich? Was erzählt uns das Bild über die Kunst, über
Venedig, über den Handel und über das Sammeln?
Reproduktionen des Gemäldes
dienen als Kern und Kulisse innerhalb der Ausstellung. Die Besucher/innen können
sich, gleichsam wie in einem lebensgroßen Papiertheater, in der begehbaren
Rauminstallation bewegen. In dieser verräumlichten Bildebene, sind die
einzelnen Kunstwerke zu sehen, die von den eingeladenen Künstler/innen
gestaltet werden. Die Werke bilden in Folge eine Kommentarebene, die Bezug
nimmt auf die im Bild und in dessen Kopien lesbaren Referenzen. So kann sich
nicht nur eine neue Lesart des gemalten Dokuments ergeben, sondern eine Fülle
von narrativen Überlagerungen entstehen.
Die Ausstellung wird Ende
dieses Jahres nach Venedig weiterwandern. Der Reimport des Ausgangsbildes,
welches durch die vielschichtigen Interpretationen der Künstler/innen ergänzt
wird, stellt dann eine direkte Konfrontation zwischen Dokument und Wirklichkeit
dar.
